Synopsis

*SPOILERS ABOUND*

A mysterious conversation about Superman plays out while Clark zooms back to his parents' house in Smallville to admire his Legion ring. His mom comes in and asks why, saying his true friends will welcome him with open arms. He goes into the field to a tree with a "L" carved in the bark, when Saturn Girl appears - only it's the Darkseid Legion Saturn Girl.

Saturn Girl puts him on a mind trip that makes him think Rokk is destroying the Watchtower while Garth kills Ma Kent.  Clark realizes this is a mental ruse and Saturn Girl stops, taking him through a memory trip to decide his fate.  Suddenly Time Trapper appears and takes Clark away to a pocket Smallville with a surprising resident.

Darkseid takes his Saturn Girl back, upset with her disobedience.

Commentary

So here we are - the beginning of the long awaited conflict between Superman and the Legion of Darkseid. And who knows where we'll end up? Will we get an actual new LSH series of some kind? We will have to wait and see.

The first cool thing about this is that we learn basically from the jump that the Superman met the Legion as a kid.  That is a GOOD THING.  And we don't have a Mike Carlin in sight to tell us otherwise. THE LEGION OF SUPERHEROES EXISTED WITH SUPERBOY AS ITS INSPIRATION.  Done and done.  See how easy that is?

That team is absolutely different from this one corrupted by Darkseid, but I want to know more about what actually happened to get that universe into that state.  Part of me wondered if this was a take on the Threeboot with its "adults versus kids" theme, with the kids winning in spectacularly violent fashion based on Saturn Girl's comments about her parents.  Of course, that Legion's Imra never spoke out loud, so it's definitely not her. Probably.

The sudden kidnapping by Time Trapper was an interesting twist, as was this new Pocket Universe that harkened back to the older iteration of the Time Trapper.  But I can't say I was happy to see Superboy Prime.  I honestly want him kept as far away from the Legion as possible, but if he's here to somehow reverse what he did in Legion of Three Worlds, then I MIGHT be interested.

Art wise, this team of Mora and Sånchez is great.  I love the art in this issue.  There are also a ton of variant covers for this that seem to be great.

Grade: B.  I might have gone to an A if not for Superboy Prime, but I reserve the right to change my grade.

NOTE - the synopsis was updated to correct an error.  Thank you to user r/!
