The Abnett & Lanning Reboot Legion - A look back

Image
I first started this effort of reviewing the post-Legion Lost Abnett & Lanning Legion works after examining my own extreme negative reaction in an online poll about how long DnA should have been allowed to write the Legion.   I voted on it after having read all the reboot up to LSH 125 just prior. I had read the full run of DnA back in the day (not in real-time though), and just remembered checking out in the latter half of the first year's issues. One world-busting, character-morphing event after another that did not include any of the characters I loved just seemed to leave me cold. But I was vehement and voted that DnA should never have touched the book. If I'm being honest, I still would wonder what a different creative team would have done; the book needed shaking up, but I am still not convinced it needed 5 years of DnA. By the end of the journey, I started appreciating what they did a lot more, but I do think they were on the title for much too long. Abnett ...

The Legion #26 - Foundations, Part 2, Electric Boogaloo

Image
Released November 12, 2003 DC Comics, Color 21 Pages Foundations Part Two Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning - Writers Chris Batista - Pencils Chip Wallace - Inks Sno Cone - Colors Jared K. Fletcher - Letters Stephen Wacker - Editor Synopsis A sacrifice is made before the throne of Darkseid on Apokalips, but it is not enough. Five weeks pass. A team of Legionnaires and Superboy enter the Enduku system to investigate a stargate.  Superboy is clearly annoying Cosmic Boy with his attitude - he's eager to get back to his time, and rushes into the situation.  Superboy encounters three of Darkseid's minions who zap him, and the Legion flings into action. Umbra's darkness and Spark's electricity don't seem to have any affect on them, and neither does raw brawling. The lead minion rips the S off of Superboy's T-shirt and the three vanish in a Boom Tube. On Legion World's Winath habitat, Garth, in his Element Lad body, is moping as the return of Superboy is still the cent...

The Legion #14 - Review!

Image
Released December 14, 2002 DC Comics, Color 22 Pages Flesh is Weak Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning - Writers Oliver Coipel - Pencils Andy Lanning - Inks Jason Wright - Colors Mike McAvennie and Stephen Wacker - Editors Synopsis We pick up at the end of last issue's attack on Legion World by Robotica, specifically the attack on the Titanet node.  Saturn Girl appears to be the sole survivor of the adepts and appears to be toast when Timber Wolf comes out of nowhere and shreds the Robotican attackers. They do a quick intro of each other. Imra is pessimistic about their odds. Suddenly, a breach appears in the Earth's shield, apparently courtesy of Kinetix, and the Legion jumps through a threshold.  Kinetix is matrixed-into the Robotican construct and somehow Shvaughn was able to convince her to not go full Robotica.  The Legionnaires begin to plan an infiltration when they are discovered and the fight begins. Cos and Jazmin handily take out the Roboticans.    Sharn an...

The Legion #13 - Review!

Image
Released October 23, 2002 DC Comics, Color 23 Pages Meanwhile... Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning - Writers Kev Walker - Art Jason Wright - Colors Comicraft - Letters Mike McAvennie - Editor Synopsis Brainiac 5 and Computo continue their parley. We get another recap of Computo's history, with the callout to LSH 98-100.  A history that conveniently omits the part about him trying to murder Triad.   On Legion World, Jazmin gives the order to attack.  Triad orders Chuck to open fire. Warworld appears in orbit next to Legion World. Star Boy keeps everything light so as to not interfere with Earths' gravity.  RJ and Brin have a nice discussion where RJ offers Brin Legion membership.   Computo tells his story after the LSH 100 - he was apparently restarted during the Imperiex war and afterwards drifted for a thousand years at the edge of what would be UP space.   Our next "meanwhile" moment has us visiting our friends in Credo.  They are f...

The Legion #4 Review!

Image
Released January 30, 2002 DC Comics, Color 23 Pages Moon Rise Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning - Writers Oliver Coipel - Pencils Andy Lanning - Inks Tom McCraw - Colors Comicraft - Letters Mike McAvennie - Editor Synopsis Issue 4 begins with Darren the orderly walking into the Earthgov Footstep Drive facility (Not UP, which I find interesting). He walks down a long corridor lined with cells labeled in Interlac and Arabic letters bearing a world name and a number.  He ominously tells them that it will be the last day working.  We finally meet Gates, apparently held captive for the last year as a test subject. Darren prepares to kill Gates when the power goes out. Gates toys with Darren for a bit before popping out of a portal and clocking him, stealing his keycard. Gates pops out to find the Legion in the corridor: Leviathan (Violet), Triad and Brainy.  Ra's is overseeing the lunar terraforming platform when informed about the Footstep lab issue as he and Venge activat...
